Coaching and Mentoring
Coaching and mentoring are key tools for personal and professional development. They help individuals achieve career goals, strengthen leadership skills, navigate transitions, and build resilience. The NHS North West Leadership Academy believes every single NHS staff member should have access to coaching and mentoring resources, support and development opportunities, as highlighted in the 10 Year Plan.
Coaching
Coaching is a method of developing an individual’s capabilities in order to facilitate the achievement of organisational success. This one to one focused and bespoke relationship is often perceived as the single most effective development intervention that a senior leader in the NHS can access.
Who can access coaching?
Access as a coach: the Hub requires coaches to hold a professional coaching qualification (e.g. ILM5/7, ACC, PCC or ICF) or the ability to evidence equivalent experience over the past couple of years (e.g. past coaching hours, relationships, CPD and supervision). Registered coaches on the Hub will be provided with access to regular CPD, coaching supervision, and network learning events.
Access as a coachee is open to all employees working in NHS organisations across the North West (Cheshire and Merseyside , Greater Manchester and Lancashire and South Cumbria).
Mentoring
Mentoring develops leaders through sharing of knowledge, skills and experience, and is available to a diverse range of employees. Cross-organisational, cross-professional and peer mentoring relationships are actively encouraged to widen horizons. Working with a mentor can create a greater self-awareness of an individual’s unique talents and identify gaps in their current skills set.
Who can access mentoring?
Access as a mentor or mentee: the Hub is open to all employees working in NHS organisations across the North West (Cheshire and Merseyside , Greater Manchester and Lancashire and South Cumbria). New mentors will need to undertake a mentor development programme which is hosted by the NHS NWLA prior to beginning a mentoring relationship. Our mentor development programme can be accessed here.

North West Coaching Collaborative (NWCC), a new regional partnership bringing together:
- NHS North West Leadership Academy
- North West ADASS
- North West Employers
The North West Coaching Collaborative has been established in response to a clear and shared ambition across our region to build a vibrant cross sector coaching community that strengthens leadership, supports workforce development, and enhances the quality and reach of coaching. As public services face increasing pressure, the need for innovative, cross-sector approaches has never been greater.
By creating a shared coaching community, the NWCC enables practitioners to exchange ideas, reflect, and build capability together, overall strengthening the quality and accessibility of coaching across the region. The collaborative also plays a critical role in supporting more integrated ways of working between health, social care, and local government. Members of North West ADASS and North West Employers who would like to be part of the NWCC can now access coaching and register as a coach to be part of this initiative. If you have any queries regarding access please contact your relevant supporting organisation at either nwadass@wigan.gov.uk or support@nwemployers.org.uk.
Further information on the North West Coaching Collaborative can be found here.
